Urgent Care vs. Emergency Room: How to Know Where to Go in Encino

When a health concern arises unexpectedly, one of the first decisions you face is where to seek care. Choosing between an urgent care center and a hospital emergency room affects not only your wait time and out-of-pocket cost, it can also affect the quality and speed of the care you receive. Encino Commons Urgent Care has served the Encino community since 2002 as part of Encino Town Medical Group, providing prompt, high-quality care for a wide range of non-life-threatening conditions in a welcoming, state-of-the-art environment.

Understanding the Two Settings

Urgent care centers are designed to handle conditions that require prompt medical attention but are not immediately life-threatening. They bridge the gap between a primary care office, which often cannot accommodate same-day appointments for acute concerns, and the emergency room, which is equipped for critical and life-threatening emergencies.

Emergency rooms are staffed and equipped to handle the full spectrum of medical emergencies, from trauma and cardiac events to strokes and severe infections. This capability comes with significantly higher costs and, for non-emergency patients, significantly longer wait times.

When to Go to Urgent Care

Urgent care is the right setting for conditions that need prompt attention but are not life-threatening:

  • Minor cuts, lacerations, or wounds requiring sutures or wound closure
  • Sprains, strains, and minor fractures requiring X-ray and immobilization
  • Fever, flu symptoms, cold, or upper respiratory infection
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Skin rashes, hives, or minor infections
  • Eye infections or minor eye injuries (not penetrating trauma)
  • Ear pain, ear infections, or foreign bodies in the ear
  • Sore throat, strep throat, or tonsillitis
  • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea without signs of severe dehydration
  • Work physicals, pre-employment drug screenings, and sports physicals

When to Go to the Emergency Room

The ER is the appropriate setting for life-threatening or potentially life-threatening emergencies. Go to the ER immediately, or call 911, for:

  • Chest pain or pressure, or suspected heart attack
  • Stroke symptoms: sudden face drooping, arm weakness, or speech difficulty (think FAST)
  • Severe difficulty breathing or respiratory distress
  • Uncontrolled major bleeding
  • Loss of consciousness or severe head trauma
  • Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) involving difficulty breathing or throat swelling
  • Significant abdominal pain that is severe or sudden in onset
  • Overdose or poisoning

When in doubt about whether a condition is an emergency, it is always appropriate to call 911 or go to the nearest ER. The cost and inconvenience of an unnecessary ER visit are minor compared to the consequences of delaying care for a genuine emergency.

The Cost Difference Is Significant

Emergency room visits are among the most expensive encounters in the American healthcare system. Even with insurance, the copayment for an ER visit is typically three to five times higher than an urgent care copayment, and without insurance, the difference can be thousands of dollars. For conditions that can be appropriately managed at urgent care, choosing urgent care represents significant savings without any compromise in care quality.
