Strep Throat Symptoms: When Testing Is Necessary

Sore throats are a common reason people seek medical care, particularly for children and teens. While many sore throats are caused by viruses and improve with rest, some are caused by group A Streptococcus bacteria — commonly known as strep throat — and require medical testing and treatment.

What Is Strep Throat?

Strep throat is a bacterial infection that primarily affects the throat and tonsils. It’s more common in children and teens but can occur at any age. Unlike viral sore throats, which usually improve within a few days, strep throat requires diagnosis and antibiotic treatment to prevent complications.

Symptoms That Suggest Strep Throat

These symptoms may indicate strep throat rather than a viral infection:

• Sudden onset of sore throat
• Painful swallowing
• Fever higher than 101°F
• Red, swollen tonsils with white patches
• Swollen lymph nodes in the neck
• Lack of runny nose or cough

Presence of multiple symptoms increases the likelihood of a bacterial cause.

Why Testing Matters

Only a clinical test can confirm whether a sore throat is caused by strep bacteria. At urgent care, a rapid strep test can provide results in minutes, allowing immediate diagnosis and treatment. If the rapid test is negative but suspicion remains high, a throat culture may be performed for confirmation.

Treatment for Strep Throat

When strep is confirmed, antibiotic therapy is typically prescribed to clear the infection, reduce symptoms, and prevent complications such as rheumatic fever. Hydration, rest, and over-the-counter pain relievers also support recovery.

When to Seek Care Promptly

Seek urgent care testing if symptoms are severe, persistent for more than a couple of days, or if you have fever and difficulty swallowing. Early diagnosis accelerates relief and reduces the risk of spreading the infection.
