Here at Encino Town Medical Group / Encino Commons Urgent care, we are dedicated to getting you in, diagnosed and treated as smoothly and quickly as possible so you can return to your regular routine.
What is a Sinus Infection?
A sinus infection, also known as sinusitis or rhinosinusitis, can occur when the air cavities within the passages of the nose become inflamed and cause pain and pressure. Infection and swelling occurs when fluid become trapped in the sinuses and allows germs to grow. A sinus infection most commonly occurs right after an allergy flare up or a viral infection and can last well after you’ve healed from your illness. Most sinusitis will clear up on it’s own, but if symptoms worsen please see your doctor.
There are Two Types of Sinus Infections:
Acute Sinusitis is usually part of a cold or any other respiratory illness and can easily be treated with medication. These types of infections usually clear up within four weeks or less.
Chronic Sinusitis may develop if you are prone to sinus
infections (more than four sinus infections a year) or your sinus infection lasts more than eight weeks.

Symptoms of a Sinus Infection
Sinus Pressure and Pain – Pain and pressure vary but many patients experience pain that spreads around the eyes, cheeks and forehead as well. The urge to sneeze and sensitivity to touch are possible symptoms.
Fever – Developing a fever with a sinus infection is common because a fever is an indicator that the body is fighting off an infection.
Headaches
Congestion
Coughing
Postnasal Drip – Occurs when mucus drips from the nose down to the back of the throat.
Bright Mucus – Bacteria and viruses can cause the mucus to change color. Blowing your nose and coughing up bright mucus is an indicator of an infection.

Sore Throat
Tooth Pain
Fatigue
Ear Pain
Loss Sense of Smell – The extreme congestion that accompanies a sinus infection can make it difficult to breath or losing smell & taste senses.
How to Treat a Sinus Infection
Most sinus infections will clear up on their own within four weeks and don’t require medication. It all depends on the severity of your sinus infection (bacterial infection usually requires antibiotics), age and your overall health. If your sinus infection lasts longer than four weeks or your symptoms worsen, please see your doctor to prescribe medication.

Home Remedies for Sinus Pain Discomfort
Even if your sinus infection isn’t severe enough to require medication, we know that the pain can be awful.
Here are a few at-home remedies to relieve pain and discomfort caused by your sinus infection.
- Antihistamines & Steroid Nasal Spray not only is an allergies remedy, but can help reduce inflammation in the sinuses.
- Heating pads/warmth help ease pain in the sinuses and aides in loosening the fluid to relieve pressure.
- Saline nasal sprays and nasal decongestant sprays help relieve pressure from congestion. (Avoid using decongestants on a long-term basis. They are known to make symptoms worse if used over a long period of time).
- Vaporizers and humidifiers can relieve pressure from the sinuses.
