Shin Splint Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome

Shin splints are defined as pain along the inside edge of the shinbone. Generally, this is between the middle of the lower leg to the ankle. The pain may be dull or sharp and is generally brought on by exercise. It generally resolves during periods of rest. Complications may include stress fractures. Shin splints typically occur due to excessive physical activity. Groups that are commonly affected include runners, dancers, and military personal. The underlying mechanism is not entirely clear.

The cause is stress on your shinbone and the connective tissues that attach muscles to your bones. They get inflamed and painful. This common problem can result from:

  • Flat feet — when the impact of a step makes your foot’s arch collapse
  • Shoes that don’t fit well or provide good support
  • Working out without warmup or cooldown stretches
  • Weak ankles, hips, or core muscles

How Are They Treated?

  • side They often heal on their own.
  • Rest your body. It needs time to heal.
  • Ice your shin to ease pain and swelling. Do it for 20-30 minutes every 3 to 4 hours for 2 to 3 days, or until the pain is gone.Use insoles or orthotics for your shoes. Shoe inserts — which can be custom-made or bought off the shelf — may help if your arches collapse or flatten
  • when you stand up.
  • Take anti-inflammatory painkillers, if you need them. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), like ibuprofen , naproxen, or aspirin, will help with pain and swelling. These drugs can have effects

How to Treat a Thin Skin Shin Wound

  • Minor cuts and scrapes are a part of life.
  • Administering proper first aid when you are wounded helps prevent infections and minimize the risk of scarring.
  • Most skin wounds can be treated simply at home and do not require a trip to the doctor or emergency room, according to MayoClinic.com. If you cut or scrape your shin, begin administering first aid immediately for best results during the healing process.

Take Following Steps

  • Apply pressure with a clean bandage or cloth if the wound is bleeding heavily. Minor cuts and scrapes typically do not require this step because bleeding is minimal.
  • Wash your hands with soap and water before tending to your wound, MedlinePlus advises.
  • Wash the wound with soap and water.
  • Apply antibacterial ointment to the wound to prevent an infection from developing. A thin layer of ointment is all you need to protect against infection.
  • Cover the wound with a bandage. Be sure to use a bandage large enough that it will not stick to the actual wound, but instead the skin surrounding it, MedlinePlus advises.
  • wound each day and apply a new bandage, the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh recommends. Change the bandage or dressing every time it gets dirty or wet.
  • Watch your wound for signs of infection. If the wound is draining, red or swollen, or if the pain increases, seek medical attention, MayoClinic.com advises.

Things You’ll Need

Clean bandage or cloth; Soap and water; Antibacterial ointment; Adhesive bandage

Severe cuts or wounds

  • If your cut is more than a half-inch long or a half-inch deep or does not stop bleeding after applying pressure for 10 minutes, wounds that have dirt embedded may require stitches or medical intervention.
  • Always seek medical attention if your wound was caused by an animal bite or a rusty hook, nail or other object, MedlinePlus advises.

Signs Your Shin Splints Have Healed

  • You’ll know they’re fully healed when:
  • Your injured leg is as flexible as your other leg.
  • Your injured leg feels as strong as your other leg.
  • can push hard on spots that used to be painful.
  • You can jog, sprint, and jump without pain.

There’s no way to say exactly when your shin splints will go away. It depends on what caused them. People also heal at different rates; 3 to 6 months isn’t unusual.
