Headaches can also be a symptom of a more serious medical condition, such as a brain tumor or infection.

When to Seek Medical Help

If you have a headache that is severe, persistent, or accompanied by other symptoms, such as fever, stiff neck, or vomiting, you should seek medical attention. You should also seek medical attention if you have a headache that is new or different from your usual headaches.

Prevention of a Headache

There are several things you can do to help prevent headaches, including:

  • Get enough sleep
  • Stay hydrated
  • Eat regular meals
  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol
  • Manage stress
  • Get regular exercise
  • See a doctor if you have chronic headaches

Diagnosis of a Headache

The doctor will likely start by asking you about your medical history and your symptoms. They will then perform a physical exam of your head and neck. During the physical exam, your doctor may check your range of motion, strength, and reflexes. They may also press on different areas of your head to see if it causes pain.

If your doctor suspects that you have a more serious medical condition, they may order additional tests, such as:

  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Computed tomography (CT) scan
  • Lumbar puncture

Once your doctor has diagnosed the cause of your headache, they will develop a treatment plan that is right for you.
