Sprains and strains mark some of the most common sports injuries. A sprain involves an injury to the ligament which is the band connecting bones in a joint. A strain refers to an injury to the tendons or muscle fibers, which anchor the muscle to the bone. Some of the most common sports injuries include ankle sprain, hamstring strain, groin pull, knee injury, shin splints, and tennis elbow.


Sports injuries are preventable in many cases, if the individual follows the basic rules of caution. Every sports workout should be preceded by a gentle warm-up session to prevent injuries. Warm-up improves the blood flow to the muscles and makes them more flexible. Overuse injuries are preventable if the athlete engages in pre-participation training prior to hard activity. Muscle fatigue increases the risk of injury because the protective mechanism begins to fail. Therefore, an individual must stop playing or training when he or she is fatigued.


Minor sports injuries can be treated using home remedies. However, several common sports injuries may require medical attention for proper healing. Sometimes even with professional medical treatment, the injury may take months to heal. Surgery may become necessary if the strain or sprain is severe and the entire ligament, tendon or muscle is torn away.

Treatment for Ankle Sprain

With an ankle sprain, it is recommended to perform specific exercises that will prevent loss of strength and flexibility. A physical therapist or doctor can advise the appropriate exercises, depending on the extent of injury. A higher ankle sprain requires professional medical attention to ensure that the bones in the lower leg have not separated.

Treatment for Hamstring Strain

The hamstring is formed by three muscles in the back of the thigh. The hamstring may get overstretched when the sportsman kicks the leg out sharply during running. Falling forward may also cause a hamstring injury. This injury can be slow to heal due to the constant stress that comes on to the injured tissue from walking.

Treatment for Groin Pull

A groin injury should be treatment with compression and ice to promote healing. The injured person should also take plenty of rest. If the injury involves significant swelling, medical attention should be sought. Returning to regular activities prior to healing may aggravate the groin pull.

Athletes who wish to prolong their career should take care to minimize sports injuries by following the rules of prevention as diligently as possible.
